Community salaries on the rise

Community managers are making more money and communities are generating an impressive economic footprint, according to results of the 2021 ACM State of Community Management Report.

Results of the fifth annual national survey of online communities and community management in Australia has been released.

The report is the only research of its kind in the region, and is used by community professionals, aspiring community managers, employers looking to hire community managers, researchers, policy-makers and more.

Here are some of the key findings:

  • Not-For-Profit, Health and Government are the top sectors hosting online communities in Australia

  • The three top industry sectors investing in online communities are Health, Government and Technology

  • Knowledge building or sharing is the leading purpose for online communities 

  • Online community managers are 61% female and 50% European (English)

  • 63% of community professionals are tertiary qualified

  • Community professionals’ average salary has risen to $100,000 - $130,000 pa.

  • 62% of community professionals now work for a single business or organisation

  • 34% of online community practitioners say their role is understood and valued

  • 27% of community practitioners want formal accreditation for their work

  • 95% of community managers invest in further education 

  • 85% of community managers conduct post-moderation and reactive moderation in their communities

  • 15% of community managers are planning to change platforms for ethical reasons

  • 30% of community managers report an increase in workload due to the pandemic  

  • 30% have struggled with their health and wellbeing as a result of the pandemic

  • 51% of community practitioners work outside a traditional office 

  • 41% are optimistic about the future of community management 

  • 54% of online communities in Australia have fewer than 10,000 members

  • 3% of online communities that make money are generating more than $5 million annually for their organisations

  • 48% of community practitioners are working with AI and automation
